Toll-Free Calling

A toll-free number is unique because the telephone carrier charges the cost of calling the number to the called party, rather than the caller.

A toll-free number is assigned from a special dialing prefix range (also known as an area code) – such as 800 – where all calls to those prefixes are free to the caller.

The cost of the call is based on various factors, including the amount of usage the number receives, the cost of the trunk lines to the facility, and possibly a monthly flat-rate service charge.
